ACL Prevention & Lower Extremity Injuries
Thomas Spears, DO – Ortho Montana

  • Discuss evidence based techniques & exercises for ACL prevention to incorporate into everyday practice
  • Explain common lower extremity injuries and the mechanism of injury involved with each injury

Run & Jump Mechanics
Alex McMeekin, PT DPT – Mountainland Physical Therapy

  • Identify efficient running form by recognizing the visual cues of proper arm drive, posture, and foot strike in athletes.
  • Demonstrate safe jumping and landing mechanics to minimize knee and ankle strain, specifically focusing on the “soft landing” technique.

Rehabilitation Exercise for Lower Extremity Injuries

  • Identify rehabilitation exercises to target the ankle, knee & hip.
  • Demonstrate each exercise and cues given to correct form during rehab.

  • Summarize the mechanism of injury for common upper extremity injuries
  • Describe predisposing factors to address to avoid injury

Throwing Mechanics

  • Identify Critical Flaws: How to spot the three most common mechanical errors in throwers (i.e. “flying open” with the front shoulder, dropping the elbow, or pushing the ball).
  • Prevent Arm Injuries: Identify physiological warning signs of arm fatigue and how to manage pitch/throw counts to protect developing joints.

  • Review MHSA’s new form for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Discuss signs, symptoms & predisposing factors of sudden cardiac arrest.

The Student Athlete Experience
Danny Desin, CMPC – Montana Peak Performance

  • Educates coaches on the mental obstacles that student athletes are facing in our state.
  • Provide recommendations for understanding and enhancing the student-athlete experience; help coaches address these mental obstacles more directly.
