2019 Conference Theme

Theme: Young Warriors. Pediatric Sports Medicine

The 28th Annual Magic City Sports Medicine Conference (MCSMC) presented by Athletic Medicine and Performance strives to provide educational content at advanced and essential level to sports medicine health care professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge. The planning committee, based on feedback from prior conferences, selected the topic of “Youth Warriors” to focus the conference on to increase knowledge, competence, performance and patient outcomes. The goal of this conference is to take your knowledge of current practice standards and enhance it with the best practice standards based on evidence therefore closing the practice gap.

James Elliott, MD

A graduate of the University of Washington Medical School, Dr. Elliott completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine from Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Center. He is currently the team physician for Montana State University – Billings, Rocky Mountain College, Billings Central High School, and Billings Mustangs Baseball.

Benn Phipps, MD

Dr. Phipps is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, a board certified Family Practice physician, and he completed his residency at the Montana Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as chief resident. He is a team physician for Rocky Mountain College, Montana State University – Billings, the Billings Mustangs, and along with the rest of the AMP team works with numerous high schools in the area. In his “spare time” he enjoys wilderness and sports medicine as well as hunting, fishing and backpacking.

Heather Hansen, MD

Dr. Hansen is a graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan who specialized in Pediatric Orthopedic Care and Surgery at Ortho Montana. She completed a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery fellowship and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Research Assistant at the University Orthopedics Inc, Warren Alpert School of Medicine, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling and being active along with being a dedicated sports fan.

Danny Desin, MS

Danny is a sport psychology consultant in Billings, MT. He provides services to help improve performance and well-being in all athletes while having an impact on sports culture. He is a graduate of Montana State University Billings with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. He also holds a Master’s of Science in Psychology with a specialization in Sport Psychology from California Southern University. He is currently working on a Doctorate degree in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of Western States. He played college basketball at both Montana State University and MSU – Billings.

Russ Richarson, ATC

Russ is a National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame member who currently holds the position of the Director of Student – Athlete Health and Wellness for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He is the former Director of Athletics at University of Montana Western. He is an athletic trainer who has held many positions such as a practicing athletic trainer, clinical preceptor, adjunct professor and mentor. He is a graduate of Washington State University with his Doctorate of Education, a graduate of California State University in Fresno with a Master of Arts in Physical Education with an Emphasis in Athletic Training and a graduate of Western Montana College in Dillon, MT with a Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education.

Kelsey Hoffman, DO

Dr. Hoffman is the current Sports Medicine Fellow working with Riverstone and Ortho Montana. She is a graduate of Midwestern University – Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, , a board certified Family Practice physician, and she completed her residency at the Montana Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as chief resident. She enjoys the outdoors, yoga and cooking.

Steven Klepps, MD

Dr. Klepps completed a shoulder and elbow fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after graduating from the Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Klepps is a team physician for Billings Mustangs Baseball Team, Rocky Mountain College and Montana State University - Billings. Dr. Klepps coaches soccer and wrestling.

Thomas Salazar, PT

Tommy is currently a physical therapist for Ortho Montana. He earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology certificate in orthopedic Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from San Diego State University. His main focus is in orthopedics for and aging population. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the United States Army Reserve.

Lauren Hasquet, PT

Lauren is a currently a Physical Therapist at Ortho Montana. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Mary and her Bachelors of Science in Health and Human Performance from the University of Montana. She was a college volleyball player who enjoys playing and coaching. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association

Jaimee Turley, PT

Jaimee is currently a Physical Therapist at Ortho Montana. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Montana and her Bachelors of Science in Health and Human Performance from Montana State University. Her main focus is in orthopedic sports medicine and women’s health. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association

Travid Laird, PT

Travis is currently a Physical Therapist at Ortho Montana. He has his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and his Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training from Eastern Washington. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association

Gwenna Peters, PT

Gwenna is currently a Physical Therapist at Ortho Montana. She is a graduate of St. Louis University. She is trained in manual medicine with emphasis in cervical thoracic junction and ribs, cranial therapy, muscle imbalance, manipulation and exercise prescription as an adjunct to manual medicine. She is also an active member of the Montana Physical Therapy Association.
